This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
